A chef onboard a vessel will be required to have STCW’95 qualifications in marine fire-fighting, first aid at sea, sea survival, pre-sea and social responsibility.

The chef is vital to the charter experience and some owners place such value on this position that the salary may be second only to the captain. The best positions for professionally trained and qualified chefs would exist on the large private charter vessels and passenger ships that operate throughout the U.S. / Caribbean and Mediterranean / Europe.

The position varies from cook, preparing crew food or assisting the chef to chef responsible for providing 6 star quality food on board. This obviously requires creativity in sometimes having to utilize limited resources and working in small spaces to achieve this. Progression from cook to chef will require a recognized qualification and years of experience for the top jobs.

The salaries applicable will vary greatly, with the junior positions often requiring some deck work, while the more senior positions on larger vessels require managerial budgeting and provisioning skills. The range could be from $2000 to over $10 000 a month, depending on size of vessel and abilities and qualifications. You will require good, contactable references.
