Guide to Bosun Jobs
Job Description : Employment Opportunities : Education / Certification Requirements : Salary / Pay Packages
The Bosun or chief deckhand is required to have current STCW’95 qualifications for marine fire fighting, first aid at sea, sea survival, pre-sea and social responsibility.
A Bosun would have a marine background with knowledge of maintenance and deck duties. As an experienced and senior deckhand, the bosun needs to delegate duties to deckhand as well as interact with owners or guests. This position may not require the officer of the watch (O.O.W) certification necessary for watch keeping duties. In effect, the position is very similar to mate, requiring an experienced deckhand who is not ready for the responsibilities of the mate.
Salaries would vary form $2500 to $4000 depending on size and type of vessel. The position is usually on larger vessels with a larger crew complement, requiring some management and would be best paid on large charter vessels operating in the Caribbean / U.S. or Mediterranean / Europe. The next step from here is to mate, once an officer of the watch (O.O.W.) certificate of competency (C.O.C.) has been obtained.
